More than a Farmers Market

The Braintree Farmers Market (BFM) is much more than just a place to find local farms and foods.  Along with the goal to support local small farms and businesses the market mission is to create a weekly community and educational event for our visitors.  It’s a place to meet your friends and neighbors and catch up on the latest news in your neighborhood.  To enhance our visitor’s experience we host local musicians and the BFM just received a sponsorship from BELD (Braintree Electric Light Dept) that will enable us to expand the musical entertainment schedule for the 2014 season.  The BFM also provides complimentary issues of both edible Boston and edible South Shore Magazines that provide extensive information about the local foods movement, healthy lifestyles and farmers’ market friendly recipes featuring foods that are in season in our area.
The BFM also hosts multiple special events through out the market season that have been designed to entertain and educate our community.  Early in the season we host a Strawberry Festival to celebrate this fleeting and oh so delicious and healthy berry.  On August 23rd we have Kids Day when you can bring your little ones to the market to experience fun and games and help them learn to appreciate local, healthy foods.  The ever so popular Clam & Lobster Feast takes place on August 30th, which falls on Labor Day Weekend, so you can be sure to get your Ye Olde New England Clam & Lobster Feast before the summer comes to a close.  Sustainable Braintree will be sponsoring the Earth Celebration on Sept 6th with many engaging activities to educate our visitors about earth friendly and sustainable projects that will have you hugging your neighbor’s tree before you know it.  This year we are thrilled to be collaborating with Thayer Public Library with a special Library Day on Sept 13th.  Find out about their kids programs and why the library has every book on the 100 most banned book list.  Did you notice the library is now open on Saturdays during the summer?  Just one more way to make it easy to pick up a good book or movie and find the best local foods all in one trip.  On Oct 4th BELD takes over with their Public Power Day/BELD Customer Appreciation when they take the time to celebrate with their customers and say ‘Thank you’.  Oct 25th is the Make a Difference Day/Pumpkin Festival when Sustainable Braintree will be inside the Braintree Town Hall collecting gently used clothing and items to distribute to those in need. In exchange for donated items receive a free pumpkins grown by our market farmers.  Don’t forget the biggest hoe-down of the year on Nov. 22nd when we celebrate the fall harvest with our special Indoor Holiday Thanksgiving Market inside the Braintree Town Hall.  All of our vendors attend this one and it’s one big party to end the market season for another year.
Every week the market hosts a local non-profit organization under our Community Tent to help raise awareness for their causes.  Sustainable Braintree is currently organizing community groups that participate in this program.  The Braintree Farmers Market is a labor of love by local volunteers who value the mission of the market and strive to enhance our community.  If you would like to join our group of volunteers please email us at karal@braintreefarmersmarket.org.
